Anxiety Q & A

What is generalized anxiety disorder?

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is associated with excessive anxiety, worry, and apprehensive expectations about daily obligations such as work or school. With GAD, controlling the worry can feel impossible. Common symptoms of GAD include restlessness, feeling keyed up or on edge, fatigue, difficulty concentrating or mind going blank, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance.

What is separation anxiety disorder?

Separation anxiety disorder is associated with excessive fear and anxiety about separating from attachment figures (such as a parent or guardian). Separation anxiety, while developmentally appropriate for children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years old, is considered a disorder when symptoms persist and occur beyond the developmentally appropriate age range.

Common symptoms of separation anxiety disorder include excessive distress when anticipating or experiencing separation from home or attachment figures, excessive worry about losing attachment figures, nightmares about separation, and complaints of physical symptoms such as headaches and stomachaches when separation occurs or is anticipated.

What is a specific phobia?

Specific phobia is associated with extreme anxiety surrounding a specific object or situation. Examples of specific phobias could be situations such as flying on an airplane, exposure to heights or animals, or medical phobias such as receiving an injection or seeing blood.

Common symptoms of a specific phobia include instantaneous fear or anxiety when exposed to the object or situation, avoidance of the feared object or situation, and impairment in daily functioning due to fear and avoidance.

What is social anxiety disorder?

Social anxiety disorder is associated with excessive anxiety regarding the possible scrutiny by others in one or more social settings. Common symptoms of social anxiety disorder include fear of being evaluated negatively by others, avoidance of the feared social setting, or enduring the social situation with extreme anxiety. The anxiety in social anxiety disorder is always unequal to the actual threat of the feared social situation.

What is panic disorder?

Panic disorder is associated with recurrent and unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks present with immediate and unforeseen high levels of fear. Common symptoms of panic disorder include palpitations, increased heart rate, sweating, shaking, feeling short of breath, choking sensations, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, light-headedness, chills, or sensations of heat.

What is agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia is associated with excessive fear surrounding the use of public transportation, being in open or enclosed spaces, standing in line or within a crowd, or leaving the home. The feared situation almost always causes anxiety and avoidance and is out of proportion to the threat posed by the feared situation.

What treatments help manage anxiety?

Interventional Psychiatry Group offers many treatment options for anxiety disorders, including prescription medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and more. To ensure you receive the most effective medication, Interventional Psychiatry providers are proud to offer GeneSight® testing. With a cheek swab and analysis, our providers can customize your treatment plan based on how you metabolize certain medications.
