Depression Q & A

What is depression?

Depressive disorders are associated with sad, low, empty, or irritable mood. Other symptoms may include decreased pleasure or interest in activities the individual formerly enjoyed, unintentional weight loss or weight gain, increased or decreased need for sleep, slowing of full-body motor movements, restlessness, feelings of inappropriate guilt, decreased ability to concentrate, hopelessness, and thoughts of death.

How are depressive disorders diagnosed?

Our board-certified providers at Interventional Psychiatry Group diagnose depressive disorders by listening to your symptoms and past emotional experiences, with consideration for your medical history, family history, and genetic predisposition.

What treatments help manage depression?

Pharmacotherapy (medication) and psychotherapy are among the first-line treatments for depressive disorders. Interventional Psychiatry Group offers many medication treatment options, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and more. To ensure you receive the most effective medication, Interventional Psychiatry providers have the option of utilizing GeneSight® testing. With a cheek swab and analysis, our providers can customize a treatment plan based on how you metabolize certain medications.

Interventional Psychiatry Group is also proud to offer options for treatment-resistant depression, including Spravato® (esketamine) and BrainsWay Deep TMS™ (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation).

Spravato® (esketamine), from the drug ketamine, is an FDA-approved nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression that has been shown to reduce depressive symptoms within hours of treatment. Traditional antidepressants work to increase dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin within the brain. Spravato® (esketamine) instead focuses on increasing glutamate. Interventional Psychiatry Group administers Spravato® (esketamine) within our clinic on an outpatient basis with proper monitoring in place. Visit our Spravato® (esketamine) tab for more information.

BrainsWay Deep TMS™ (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a safe and effective FDA-approved option for treatment-resistant depression. TMS provides painless pulses to areas of the brain that are responsible for depression via a coil within a helmet. TMS is non-invasive and non-surgical, and it is safe to resume daily activities such as driving immediately after treatment. Visit our BrainsWay Deep TMS™ for more information.

If your Interventional Psychiatry Group provider believes you would be best served by psychotherapy, a referral can be made.
