Initial Psychiatric Evaluation Q & A

What is psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illness and disorders.

Our team at Interventional Psychiatry Group is composed of board-certified Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. Our team is trained to understand the physical, psychological, and social components of mental health.

What is an initial psychiatric evaluation?

An initial psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner, to gather information about a patient’s mental and emotional well-being.

Do I need an initial psychiatric evaluation?

You may seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be sudden, such as crippling anxiety or sudden and severe change in behavior and mood, frightening hallucinations, or thoughts of suicide. Or they may be more long-term, such as feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, tearfulness, and problems with managing day-to-day responsibilities.

Seeking an initial psychiatric evaluation is a proactive step toward understanding and addressing your concerns. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call Interventional Psychiatry Group to schedule an initial psychiatric evaluation or request to schedule by completing our online booking form today.

How do I prepare for my initial psychiatric evaluation?

After completing the new patient paperwork, you will meet one of our board-certified psychiatric providers at our outpatient office in the community of Cordova in Memphis, Tennessee. During the appointment, your provider will gather information about your personal history, including family background, medical history, and any relevant social factors.

Coming prepared for your initial psychiatric evaluation will help our team better develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and circumstances. We recommend you maintain a journal to track symptoms, moods, and thoughts, taking special note if any specific events trigger certain behaviors or thoughts.

We also recommend that you bring a list of psychiatric medications taken in the past, being sure to document how they made you feel and if you experienced any side effects. We also ask that you provide a list of all psychiatric providers seen in the past and a list of any in-patient and/or outpatient treatment facilities from which you have received treatment in the past.

What happens after my initial psychiatric evaluation?

Depending on your individual needs, your provider may refer you to psychotherapy and/or prescribe psychiatric medication. Elements of potential treatment plans include:

  • Pharmacotherapy (Prescription Medication)
  • Psychotherapy
  • Lifestyle changes
  • GeneSight® Pharmacogenetic Testing
  • Spravato® (esketamine)
  • BrainsWay Deep TMS™ (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)
