PTSD Q & A

What is PTSD?

PTSD can affect children, adolescents, and adults who have past exposure to a traumatic event (exposure to actual death, threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence). The individual may have experienced the trauma, witnessed the trauma, learned about a trauma that occurred to a close friend or family member, or been exposed to traumatic details due to occupation (first responders, etc.). Common symptoms of PTSD include repeated, unexpected flashbacks of the traumatic event or reliving the traumatic event through nightmares or dissociative states. PTSD can cause intense feelings of sadness, fear, and anger and lead to individuals feeling isolated from other people.

What treatments can help manage PTSD?

Psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy (medication) are among the first-line treatments for PTSD. If the Interventional Psychiatry Group provider believes the patient would be best served by psychotherapy, a referral can be made. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is commonly used for patients with PTSD.

Treatment for PTSD is dependent on the individual’s symptoms and psychiatric comorbidities, but antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications are commonly used. To ensure the patient receives the most effective medication, Interventional Psychiatry providers have the option of utilizing GeneSight® testing. With a cheek swab and analysis, a provider can customize a treatment plan based on how an individual metabolizes certain medications.

Interventional Psychiatry Group is proud to offer alternative treatments for PTSD, other than medication, such as Spravato® (esketamine) and BrainsWay Deep TMS™ (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation).

Spravato® (esketamine), from the drug ketamine, is an FDA-approved nasal spray that has been shown to reduce symptoms of PTSD. Spravato® (esketamine) focuses on increasing glutamate, a neurotransmitter within the brain that is not targeted by traditional antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications. Interventional Psychiatry Group administers Spravato® (esketamine) within our outpatient clinic with proper monitoring in place. Visit our Spravato® (esketamine) tab for more information.

BrainsWay Deep TMS™ (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a safe and effective option for treating PTSD. TMS provides painless pulses to areas of the brain that are responsible for psychiatric diagnoses, such as PTSD, via a coil within a helmet. TMS is non-invasive and non-surgical, and it is safe to resume daily activities such as driving immediately after treatment. Visit our BrainsWay Deep TMS™ for more information.
